International Justice Mission Builds Global Private Cloud and Cuts IT Costs With Riverbed

WAN Optimization Helps Human Rights Organization to Consolidate and Centralize Servers While Accelerating Application Performance and Obtaining Cost Savings

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - August 31, 2010) - Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, today announced that International Justice Mission (IJM), an international non-profit human rights organization leading the fight against modern-day slavery and other forms of violent oppression, has deployed 15 Riverbed® Steelhead® appliances across all of its offices on four continents to support a successful private cloud initiative, including centralization of Exchange 2007 servers. As a result of the deployment, IJM has dramatically increased data and application access for case workers, cut IT costs by avoiding bandwidth upgrades, and achieved a return on investment (ROI) in 10 months.

IJM is a human rights organization that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation, and other forms of violent oppression. IJM lawyers, investigators and aftercare professionals work with local officials to ensure immediate victim rescue and aftercare, to prosecute perpetrators, and to ensure that poor people are protected from abuse by their laws, courts and police systems. The non-profit was faced with costly maintenance of legacy remote servers at its regional offices located in the U.S., Asia, Africa and Latin America. The estimated $140,000 necessary for server upgrades was too expensive for the organization's IT budget and would divert funds away from the critical casework that is IJM's mission. In addition, upgrading servers would not address email performance issues that case workers in the field often faced.

Email is the IJM case workers' most critical application for communicating about rescue missions. In many cases, the speed of email communications is critical to the safety of people working in the field. However, in many remote locations employees were using dial-up or satellite, which made accessing email challenging and often unreliable. In addition, this process made the maintenance of email the most expensive element of the organization's IT infrastructure. IJM found that adding bandwidth was cost-prohibitive, and dispatching IT support to remote locations was very costly as well. IJM's IT organization quickly realized they needed to find a better option to maintain communication with remote workers while at the same time cutting IT costs.

"As we faced trying to reduce IT expenditures, we decided to centralize our email servers to reduce software and hardware costs -- in effect build a private cloud," said John Lax, vice president of information systems at IJM. "However, in order to ensure email was accessible in our 13 remote offices, we chose WAN optimization instead of costly bandwidth upgrades. Based on our research we determined that bandwidth upgrades would not address the latency issues we were experiencing."

After evaluating the Riverbed solution and reviewing alternatives from other vendors, IJM selected Riverbed Steelhead appliances to accelerate the performance of its IT infrastructure. IJM selected Riverbed Steelhead appliances for their simpler management and increased performance. As a result, the organization was able to centralize its Exchange 2007 servers to its data center without interruption of service to its employees on four continents.

As a result of its Steelhead appliance deployment, IJM was able to build a private cloud that addressed its Exchange 2007 performance and upgrade issues, while avoiding costly bandwidth upgrades and accelerating access to critical applications. "For example," said Lax, "in Uganda we have a 128K satellite link delivering only 64K performance, which is insufficient to support an office of 12-14 workers. With Riverbed WAN optimization, we get five times the throughput with the performance of a 256K link. The Riverbed Steelhead appliances effectively doubled our bandwidth capacity while saving us nearly $60,000 in Uganda alone during one year."

An additional benefit from deploying Steelhead appliances is IJM's ability to run SharePoint for Intranet and training manuals. Before IJM deploys a case worker or an attorney out to the field, it trains the field teams and equips them with a training manual. With less data travelling across its global WAN satellite links due to its Steelhead appliance deployment, the organization was able to implement paperless training manuals, which has both allowed IJM to download from SharePoint faster and save money on printing costs. Overall, IJM achieved an ROI in ten months, avoiding costly bandwidth upgrades while decreasing bandwidth utilization by 5x.

"With Riverbed Steelhead appliances, we were able to stretch our already thin IT budget and get the job done quicker, avoid unnecessary upgrades and better utilize the infrastructure we already had," added Lax. "This enabled our investigators, lawyers and social workers to collaborate in a timelier manner, provide relief and aftercare to victims faster, and work with local partners, community leaders and local judicial systems to lower the risk of future abuse and hold perpetrators accountable."
