International Youth Day 2009

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 11, 2009) - The motivational theme the United Nations has chosen for International Youth Day 2009, Sustainability: Our challenge. Our Future, is an invitation to consider the many concerns and ideas young people have in this regard, as well as their initiatives.

It is a global challenge that especially affects you-today's youth, those who will inherit everything that previous generations have passed on. Our planet is undergoing a dramatic transformation and, in many ways, is in a pitiful state: energy wastage; irresponsible exploitation of raw materials; water, air and soil pollution; climate change; global food and economic crises; social inequalities; and so much more.

I know you are aware of the magnitude of the challenges we are all currently facing. But, as I often say, I am convinced that you have the determination, courage and power to turn things around and get involved, to establish a new era of innovation, social responsibility and solidarity.

There are a number of networks that will help you develop your skills, have your voices heard and get things started. Do not hesitate to expand these networks and build bridges between generations. I am thinking, among other things, of the Youth Dialogues and the Mentorship Program I created last year for young people and members of the Order of Canada. I strongly believe that you are our best hope for success. You can count on my support for the solutions you suggest.
