'Internet rate' mobile calls on the City of London's new Wi-Fi network

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - April 24, 2007) - This week's launch by The Cloud of an open Wi-Fi network across the City of London brings the prospect of internet rate mobile calls to an estimated 350,000 Square Mile workers. Truphone's mobile VoIP service enables the latest mobile phones to make calls over The Cloud's Wi-Fi network and the Internet instead of over their normal cellular network, slashing the cost of international mobile calls in particular.

Carl Lyons, Truphone's marketing director, said: "Truphone working on the Cloud City of London network means another milestone in the internet telephony revolution has been passed. It is now possible to make internet-rate calls on a very desirable mobile phone while walking through the streets of the world's foremost financial district."

Truphone's mobile internet telephony service works on many Wi-Fi-enabled handsets including the brand new Nokia N95, E65 and E61 handsets, with more to follow. A launch offer running until June 30th means Truphone calls to landlines and many mobiles in more than 40 countries are free when made from personal, open or office Wi-Fi access points. Through a roaming agreement with The Cloud, Truphone users can automatically make and receive calls from 7,500 UK hotspots, including the City of London Wi-Fi zone, from just 3p/minute.

Owen Geddes, Business Development Director of The Cloud, said: "One of The Cloud's central motivations in building the City of London Wi-Fi network is to allow and encourage a broad range of services. Wi-Fi is no longer solely about Internet access - companies such as Truphone are bringing compelling voice applications with the potential to save money for the 350,000 people that live and work in the Square Mile. We're therefore delighted to welcome leading edge innovators like Truphone onto Europe's flagship Wi-Fi network."

Europe's most advanced Wi-Fi network was switched on yesterday across the City of London, with 127 Wi-Fi base stations covering the entire Square Mile. The City-wide network was built by Wi-Fi hotpsot operator The Cloud in conjunction with the City of London Corporation. It is believed to be the most advanced network of its kind in Europe and is unique as users keep their signal as they travel across it.
