Interpretive Guides to Inform Visitors at National War Memorial

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 13, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission (NCC), today announced arrangements have concluded to ensure that interpretive guides will be on site at the National War Memorial this summer.

"The guides will be there to inform visitors at the National War Memorial of its historic and powerful significance," said Minister Thompson. "They will also remind visitors that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sacred site and should be accorded our full respect."

The guides are an addition to the already existing Interpretive Guide Program at the National Capital Commission. The team is composed of summer student employees affiliated with the Capital Infocentre. Two guides will be on site from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, 7 days a week, from June 20 to August 24, 2008.

"The National Capital Commission is pleased to work in collaboration with Veterans Affairs Canada to enhance the experience to this prominent site in the heart of the Capital this summer," said Marie Lemay, Chief Executive Officer of the NCC. "The interpretative guides will also help visitors discover the Valiants Memorial, located steps away from the National War Memorial."

The ceremonial sentries will return to the National War Memorial on June 28 and remain until the end of August. Other measures taken since last year to ensure the integrity of the site are enhanced year-round electronic surveillance, additional security patrols during tourist season and increased guard presence and crowd-control equipment at the site during Canada Day and other special events. These security measures were developed by representatives from Veterans Affairs Canada, the National Capital Commission, the Department of National Defence and Public Works and Government Services Canada.
