inthinc Customers Rank Among Safest Drivers in the U.S.

CSA Scores Reveal inthinc Customers Average in Top Five Percent in Driver Safety

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - Jan 17, 2012) - inthinc Technology Solutions Inc., a global telematics company centered on fleet management and driver safety solutions, announced its enterprise customers average in the top five percent of the driver safety category of the federal Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) initiative. Data, made available to the public by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), shows that carriers with large fleets using inthinc technology combined for an average score in the top five percent in driver safety, top 25 percent in vehicle maintenance and top 31 percent in fatigued driving.

"Accidents occur when there is a lack of safety controls," said Corey Catten, CTO, inthinc Technology Solutions. "Our technology empowers fleet managers with the tools they need to improve driver safety and remain compliant with growing FMCSA regulations."

CSA is an FMCSA initiative to 'improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicles'. Within the Safety Measurement System (SMS), CSA scores are calculated using data from roadside inspections, including all safety-based violations, state-reported crashes, and the Federal Motor Carrier census to quantify performance in the Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs).

Carriers receive points for infractions including speeding, reckless driving, improper lane change and inattention. Point values are determined based on the severity of the violation. Points are calculated monthly and then placed into percentiles from 0 (best) to 100 (worst), by comparing the BASIC measurements to similar carriers.

Within this scoring system, where low scores represent high performance, inthinc customers averaged 3.4 in unsafe driving, 30.2 in fatigue driving and 24.4 in vehicle maintenance; all well ahead of the national average.

With inthinc waySmart™ -- the most comprehensive fleet management and driver safety solution on the market today -- fleet managers are able to cut down on the number of infractions by monitoring driver behavior with features such as GPS-based vehicle and trip tracking, in-cab verbal coaching alerts for speeding, idling, seat belt use and aggressive driving.

waySmart™ communicates via satellite or cellular signals allowing fleet managers to monitor vehicles around the world in real-time regardless of how remote a location. With driver scoring through the portal, managers can determine the drivers that are at risk and may require more training.

Results have included:

  • 73% increase in seatbelt usage
  • 90% reduction in speeding violations
  • 89% reduction in aggressive driving behaviors
  • 80% improvement in crash rates
