Introducing "QUAKESAFE Retrofits Construction Corp."-the First Company in British Columbia Dedicated Exclusively to Earthquake-Proofing Homes on Vancouver Island and the Mainland

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2011) - The first thing Mike Ursel wanted to know when he migrated onto Vancouver Island and into BC's most active earthquake zone was how best to protect his family and home from a serious earthquake.

He soon discovered that just as residents of bear country don't live in fear of bears, many West Coasters had a relatively casual attitude about earthquakes. Unlike fellow Quake Zoners in the Pacific States who took the devastating California quakes of '89 and '94, and the Seattle quake of 2001 as urgent wake-up calls to get their houses reinforced, BC residents hadn't been moved to action in the same way.

Ursel, a professional engineer and chartered accountant whose business is the installation of pre-engineered steel buildings, was well aware of the vulnerability of wood frame houses. The 1994 earthquake in Northridge California, alone, left 40,000 such homes either extensively damaged or totally uninhabitable. He also learned that in one neighbourhood, a single home survived the quake in habitable condition. This particular Victorian home had recently undergone a seismic retrofit.

As more and more of his customers requested buildings designed to Post-Disaster building code standards, Ursel found he could no longer ignore that the safety needs of BC families were not being met in their homes. And so, he developed a seismic retrofit system for wood frame houses in consultation with West Vancouver structural engineer Thomas Day, P.Eng.

Since launching QUAKESAFE with FREE home inspections, Ursel and team have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of homeowners in Victoria and on the Mainland (where Day subsequently became the first authorized representative). "We barely had our website (www.quakesafe.ca) up when the enquires started streaming from it."

For the QUAKESAFE team, the goal is not simply to save homes. "Our most consuming desire is to help prevent tragic injury or worse, loss of life. A high-magnitude earthquake could be 50 years, 5 years, or only 5 months away. We know it's overdue," says Ursel.

Even the best insurance coverage won't help if there aren't any builders available. "For roughly the cost of a decent sofa, QUAKESAFE can give families a priceless amount of peace of mind," he adds.

QUAKESAFE also invites applications for a limited number of Authorized Dealerships on the Island and on the Mainland.
