Governments of Canada and Northwest Territories sign a bilateral agreement on sport development and participation


YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwired - April 14, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today joined Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs for the Government of the Northwest Territories, to announce contributions from the Government of Canada and Government of the Northwest Territories for sport development and participation in the Northwest Territories.

The three-year bilateral agreement involves a federal investment of $934,507 ($252,070 in 2012-2013, $430,367 in 2013-2014, and $252,070 in 2014-2015) with a matching contribution from the Northwest Territories, for a total of $1,869,014.

  • The Sport Development and Participation Bilateral Agreement aims to advance the objective "Introduction to Sport"-one of the five goals of the renewed Canadian Sport Policy (2012-2022 )-as well as three of the eight 2012 Federal-Provincial and Territorial (F-P/T) Priorities for Collaborative Action endorsed by F-P/T governments in 2012. These three priorities are:
    • supporting introduction-to-sport programming, with a focus on under-represented populations;
    • working with Aboriginal communities to identify priorities and undertake initiatives for Aboriginal sport development; and
    • supporting Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L).
