ip.access and BelAir Networks Unlock Revenue Opportunities for Mobile Network Operators With First Wireless Mesh Cellular Picocell

Innovative Picocell and Wireless Mesh Backhaul Solution Cuts Mobile Deployment Cost and Operating Expense

KANATA, ON and CAMBRIDGE, UK -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 13, 2006 -- ip.access ltd and BelAir Networks, the leader in wireless mesh networking, today announce the integration of BelAir's wireless mesh backhaul solution with ip.access' nanoBTS picocells. The combined low-cost, easy-to-install GSM/GPRS basestation and wireless backhaul solution offers cellular operators savings in both deployment costs and operating expenses. The new integrated solution will be demonstrated live at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona at the BelAir Networks booth, E49 in Hall 2, February 13 - 16, 2006.

By integrating nanoBTS with BelAir's wireless multi-service switch routers, the two companies have created a new way of delivering enhanced indoor and outdoor coverage and capacity for dense urban environments. This approach eliminates the need for the T1/E1 leased lines that have traditionally been used for backhaul in cellular networks, resulting in a more cost-effective solution. According to Pioneer Consulting, a highly regarded international marketing research and consulting firm specializing in global high-speed telecommunications networks and technology, backhaul expense is typically one-fifth of a mobile network's costs. The combined system is capable of serving hundreds of cellular sites wirelessly from a single broadband wired point of presence, offering significant operational cost savings.

"ip.access picocells, integrated with our wireless mesh backhaul system, provide mobile network operators with the most economic means of deploying more smaller cell sites in a carrier-grade form factor that mounts on streetlights and blends into the urban background," stated Dave Park, associate vice president, product management, BelAir Networks. "We are pleased to work with ip.access to bring cellular access capabilities to the BelAir product platform."

Mark Pittick, vice president of sales and marketing, ip.access, added, "This new integration with the BelAir mesh network presents an exciting way for operators to offer the benefits of picocell-based cellular coverage in areas such as city streets where it was not cost-effective before."

ip.access' nanoGSM range of wireless infrastructure products deliver coverage and capacity in difficult-to-reach areas, enabling enhanced service coverage and increased Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for Mobile Network Operators, Service Providers and MVNOs.
