Offshore and onshore healthcare and medical solutions company Iqarus has acquired Exmed, a leader in remote medical support, equipment and clinical education, as it further progresses its global growth strategy.

Exmed's customers include prominent international government and humanitarian agencies as well as global energy companies and media organisations including the BBC and Discovery Channel.

The company supports medical missions and operations in locations including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Siberia and has also provided logistics support for filming for Top Gear and Comic Relief. Exmed offers unique frontline training services and has invested in a new centre of excellence set to open in July that offers a fully simulated two storey street for replicating mass incident scenarios as well as arctic, jungle and desert simulation.

Founding directors of Exmed Ged Healy and Dai Jones will join Iqarus along with their head office team of 20 and pool of highly trained medical contractors.

Tim Mitchell, CEO of Iqarus, said the acquisition would propel Iqarus into frontline medical care in some of the world's most remote and difficult operating environments.

"Our ambition since launching Iqarus has been to rapidly grow into a global provider of health solutions in the world's difficult and remote environments. The acquisition of Exmed is a major catalyst for our international expansion. The team are amongst the most highly regarded providers of healthcare in challenging locations. The calibre of international humanitarian and government customers that they serve and the level of trust that they command in the market is a testament to their skill and professionalism. We are proud that they will be joining Iqarus and will play a key role in our growth going forward."

Iqarus was formed following the acquisition of Capita PLC's Aberdeen-based Energy Medical Services business by a management team led by CEO Tim Mitchell and MML Capital Partners last year.

The new business, which has a 40 year history of providing medical solutions to the North Sea oil and gas industry, aims to become the leading international player in healthcare solutions for remote and difficult environments through a combination of acquisition and organic growth, which includes building on its existing blue-chip energy customer base and investing in technology-enabled services.

More than £1 million has already been invested in new technology and a restructure of the business to deliver cutting edge, technology enabled support to both customers and remote healthcare professionals.

Exmed launched in 2004 and has grown year on year into a global business with operations in the Middle East, Africa, the Americas as well as its headquarters in the UK. The frontline training services in Herefordshire, UK, currently educate more than 2,000 people a year and will be combined with Iqarus' existing centre in Montrose, UK, to deliver a full offshore and onshore capability. Exmed also supplies over 9,000 items of medical equipment around the world through its online store.

Ged Healy, CEO of Exmed, will join Iqarus as an executive director. He said: "The unique vision, customer approach and strong executive team within Iqarus is a compelling mix and we are looking forward to providing medical services within remote and difficult areas of the globe through a successful, growing and expanding brand. With our unique purpose built training and supplies facility, expanding growth across the Middle East and Africa and an exceptional team of dedicated staff, we are looking forward to contributing to Iqarus' growth plans."

Iqarus announced the acquisition of occupational hygiene consultancy C-CHEC earlier this year and the launch of a new Environmental Sciences Division to provide a new integrated offering.

Issued on behalf of Iqarus by The BIG Partnership.
