Iron Mountain Reaps the Rewards of Green and Safety Initiatives

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 25, 2011) - Iron Mountain has won the UK's GreenFleet award for 'Private Sector Fleet of the Year' in recognition of the extensive efforts taken to reduce the carbon footprint of its fleet of vehicles. This is the second year running that the document management company has won the award in this category. The award recognizes the hard work and dedication to lowering the fuel consumption of commercial vehicles and to improving driver safety.

Iron Mountain, which specialises in document storage, off-site data protection, scanning and digitising, and secure shredding services, achieved the accolade as a result of:

  • The installation of fuel-saving technology across Iron Mountain's fleet of light commercial vehicles;
  • Introduction of the fleet's first all-electric vehicle;
  • The careful monitoring of driver performance to identify any areas for improvement;
  • The implementation and development of the 'Green Road' driver behavioural system to reduce the number of vehicle incidents and increase fuel efficiency.

Iron Mountain also introduced a new Fleet Management System designed to help monitor the mileage of vehicles, the level of fuel used, and the resulting miles per gallon. In addition to this, five dedicated driver trainers were brought in to screen potential new drivers prior to recruitment, with a view to assessing the performance of successful candidates on an on-going basis.

On collecting the award, Rory Morgan, logistics general manager at Iron Mountain, expressed his delight at the success: "This is a great achievement for the team here at Iron Mountain. Many are familiar with our fleet and the role we play in servicing the information management needs of leading companies up and down the country. But most do not recognise how sophisticated our transportation operations really are. We continually invest to ensure our drivers are safe, our cargo is secure and our vehicles are fuel efficient. This is something we're very proud of."

Iron Mountain proved its ability to cut vehicle incidents year on year by 18 per cent. Miles-per-gallon rates have also improved significantly thanks to the introduction of the GreenRoad system back in March of this year. Overall, the level of fuel consumption has decreased year on year since 2007. This sustained success earned the information management company its full certification of ISO 14001 standard, as well as a successful final assessment for the carbon trust standard.

This latest recognition from GreenFleet complements the award for Company Driver Safety Award bestowed upon Iron Mountain earlier this year by leading road-safety charity Brake.
