Iron Workers Local Union No. 848, Providing Skilled Iron Workers for North and South Carolina, a Feature of "Industry Today" on Industrialinfo.com Radio

SUGAR LAND, TX--(Marketwire - March 10, 2008) - Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) will host the Iron Workers Local Union No. 848 (North Charleston, South Carolina) as its special guest on Industrialinfo.com Radio on Monday, March 10, 2008, as part of the weekly online broadcast of "Industry Today." Local 848 has a history of providing the region with only the best and most technically skilled labor available. It services both North and South Carolina, providing trained and skilled iron workers capable of structural ironworking, reinforcing and post tensioning ironworking, ornamental ironworking, rigging and machinery moving, welding and burning, plus much more.

Local 848's apprenticeship programs are extensive and provide on-the-job training as part of the regular work force on which contractors and co-workers rely. Apprentices are taught the proper use, care, and safe handling of the tools and equipment used in connection with their work and, of course, the important skills necessary to become a successful tradesperson. Local 848's apprenticeship is a four-year program with eight steps/periods. For each period, the apprentice is required to have 75 hours of classroom and hands-on related training and 750 hours of on-the-job training for a total of 600 hours of related training and 6,000 hours of on-the-job training over the course of his/her apprenticeship.

Local 848 has the distinction of being the first Iron Workers local to have a distance learning program approved by the Department of Labor for apprentices that live more than 50 miles from one of its training centers in its jurisdiction. This program allows the apprentice to do his/her classroom portion of the training at home or remotely by studying the textbooks and then taking quizzes online. This program helps recruit qualified talent from a larger geography within its jurisdiction by providing conveniences that reduce time and costs related to travel for classroom training.
