Is the Sugar Devil You Know Better Than the Substitute You Don't?

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 3, 2012) - From recent surveys and discussions with Canadians, here is a sampling of the confusion about sugar:

  1. High fructose corn syrup is the most avoided sweetener; however some people believe agave nectar is just as bad.
  2. Aspartame is good for diabetes but is it safe?
  3. "White", "processed", "artificial" or "refined" sugars are avoided but what do these terms mean?
  4. Sugar alcohols (maltitol, sorbitol and xylitol) are specifically chosen by some dieters but avoided by others who want natural sweeteners.
The research does provide some clarity on sugar facts:
  1. Agave nectar has as much, if not more, fructose than high fructose corn syrup!
  2. Aspartame, cyclamate and saccharin might cause cancer in lab rats.
  3. Brown sugar is no more nutritious than white sugar.
  4. Maltitol and other sugar alcohols seem like great sugar replacers- they are lower calorie than other sweeteners but can cause diarrhea in doses found in most protein bars.
Furthermore, sweet things without calories can make us hungrier. The body may not be fooled and it will keep searching for the extra calories.
