Is Your Home Insurance as Fit as You Are, Asks Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 30, 2011) - Swinton Insurance is warning fitness fanatics that expensive gym wear, which is often not covered away from the home on their home insurance policy, could be expensive to replace the items if they are lost or stolen.

The UK's leading high street retailer of home insurance issued the warning after it was revealed that 22% of homeowners surveyed carry items worth over £200 or more in their gym bags.

Swinton is urging customers who visit the gym frequently to consider adding expensive gym equipment like running trainers, sports watches and iPods to their contents insurance policies by specifying the items on their contents insurance and ensuring they have cover for personal possessions away from the home. This can protect items up to £7,000 outside the home.

Gym wear and equipment can be very expensive. A decent pair of running shoes will cost anything from £50 upwards, while expensive sports watches and MP3 players can be in excess of £100. New technology that allows runners to add a microchip to their trainers to chart the progress of their training via their iPods will also add pounds to value of their gym bags.

Swinton is urging gym goers to always keep their expensive equipment safe, whether they have chosen to protect it through an insurance policy or not, as insurers are unlikely to pay a claim for items that have been left out in the open or unattended.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager, at Swinton said, "Nowadays gym clothing and accessories can be very expensive to replace so it is important that people who have invested money into purchasing them, consider protecting them. To replace a full bag of gym wear could turn out very costly."
