Islamic Council of Academics and Professionals: Announcement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 23, 2006) - Rear-Admiral Tyrone Pile, Chief Military Personnel, will visit the Ottawa Central Mosque, 251 Northwestern Ave. at Scott Street, on Friday 25 August at 12:45 p.m., to exchange ideas of mutual concern to Canadian Muslims and the Canadian Forces.

Admiral Pile, to whom the Canadian Defence Academy and the Royal Military College in Kingston report, is interested in establishing a program of Islamic Studies so that Canadian Forces officers, and others, can understand the depth of Muslim sensibilities by studying Islamic art, architecture, culture, economics, history, jurisprudence, languages, etc., as Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the country, with an exponential increase of 128 percent in the decade between 1991 and 2001.

The Canadian Forces has been involved in peacekeeping missions in Muslim countries or significantly Muslim regions-Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Kashmir, Kosovo, Lebanon and Syria-since 1948.

The second issue Admiral Pile will be addressing is the under-representation of Muslims in the Canadian Forces. Current population figures show that 2.3 percent of Canadians are Muslim. A Muslim imam recruited in 2003 has been deployed with our troops and is liaising between Canadian Forces personnel and the Afghan people.

There are many benefits to joining the Canadian Forces. Muslims should feel at home serving Canada as they have a tradition of military service. The Canadian Forces offers superb pay and allowances, professional training, up to 20 years of employment without lay-off, service to age 60, and a pension plan that in some cases is extended veterans' children's university education. There is also a university officer training program offering tuition fees, books, uniforms, instruments, summer employment and one month of holidays. As well, students receive a stipend (currently $1,328 per month).
