Israeli and Palestinian Leaders Meet to Share Model for Peaceful Coexistence

SOUTHBURY, CT--(Marketwire - August 18, 2009) - Leaders of an Israeli and Palestinian city will be making an unprecedented joint appearance at a Connecticut Jewish Federation next week to detail how they are working for peaceful coexistence.

Mayor Daniel Attar of Gilboa in Northern Israel, his Arab-Israeli Deputy Mayor, Ead Saleem, and Gov. Qaddoura M. Qaddoura of Jenin, in the West Bank, will be speaking at 1 p.m. Sunday, August 30 at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus in Southbury, CT in an event sponsored by the Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut.

The Israelis and Palestinian will also hold a private meeting. The Federation is also organizing with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations the following day in New York.

The Israeli and Palestinian officials were recently featured in a front-page story in The New York Times about new efforts to promote Palestinian-Israeli economic ties and foster increased stability. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former British Prime Minister and Mideast peace envoy Tony Blair have been leading these efforts to promote peace in the region.

Mayors Attar and Saleem and Gov. Qaddoura will appear at the Connecticut Jewish community forum after the Palestinian received authorization from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. This will be Qaddoura's first visit to the United States.

"This is a landmark initiative for our Jewish community, and one that can serve as an example to those involved in conflict anywhere in the world," stated Executive Director of Jewish Communities of Western CT, Inc. Robert Zwang. "Our goal is a better future for Israel and her neighbors and to help expand the circle of peace beyond the political, to support these heroic partners in their successful experiment."

The Aug. 30 event starts promptly at 1 p.m. Organizers request a tax-deductible contribution of $36 per-person. For security purposes, advanced registration is recommended. Photo ID is required at the door. There is also a private reception with reserved seating at 11:30 a.m. for a tax-deductible contribution of $365 or more. Seating is limited.
