Italian Cuisine Voted Americans' Favorite Foreign Food

Intrepid Travel Reveals Results of Food Survey, Offers 15% Off Food Tours

SANTA ROSA, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 8, 2012) - A new survey commissioned by Intrepid Travel has found that Italian is the favorite foreign cuisine for most Americans, with one in five (21%) saying it's their top choice.

The poll was conducted for the small group adventure travel specialist by YouGov and queried Americans about their food preferences and eating habits while traveling. The survey found Italian food is the most popular cuisine among 18-34-year-olds (21%), and 35-54-year-olds (21%), while the 55+ age group is more patriotic in their choice of meal and most likely to favor American cuisine (28%).

Younger travelers prove to be the more adventurous. Travelers in the 25-34-year-old group are more likely to eat from food stalls and street vendors (18%), compared to the national average (11%).

Among those surveyed who have vacationed abroad, almost half (45%) said that local cuisine is very or fairly important when choosing their destination. Almost 9 in 10 (89%) have eaten their favorite cuisine in a restaurant, almost 8 in 10 (78%) have cooked it at home, but just under a third (32%) have eaten it in a restaurant in the country of its origin.

Intrepid can help. Throughout February, Intrepid Travel is offering 15% off tours in more than 15 countries known for their fabulous cuisine, from India to Vietnam, Sri Lanka to Mexico, as well as destinations closer to home including Italy, Spain and France.

"The weirdest thing I've eaten is deep fried tarantula while traveling in Cambodia," said Gina Hemmings, Director, Corporate Partnerships for Intrepid Travel.

"Of course these days you can find lots of exotic food choices in American restaurants and supermarkets, but whether your favorite cuisine is Italian, Indian, Mexican or Malaysian, you haven't tasted it at its authentic best until you've tried it at a market stall or local eatery in the country which is known for it," adds Hemmings.

The discounted trips showcase global food at its most authentic, with cooking classes, street food and local markets featuring prominently on many of the itineraries. Trips can be booked at
