ITRI Won Solar Industry Awards 2011

HAMBURG, GERMANY--(Marketwire - Sep 6, 2011) - The Angel Business Communication Ltd. of the UK published the award winners for the Solar Industry Awards (SIA) in 2011, one of the most prestigious awards in the energy field, and held a presentation ceremony at the 26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition, EU PVSEC today (September 6). ITRI is awarded as an Excellent Organization with its Green Energy Antenna Technology in fierce competition amongst 2000 entries. This is a remarkable achievement in solar energy technology R&D on a par with the major solar energy manufacturers including 3M, Oerlikon Solar, and REC.

Under fierce competition amongst a host of technologies across the world, ITRI won the award with its critical Green Energy Antenna Technology through integration of the solar energy and wireless telecommunications industries. Chief editor David Ridsdale of the SIA hosting unit Angel Business Communication Ltd. highly acclaimed the technology from ITRI. He said, "ITRI has a long history of honor and interdisciplinary integration research, therefore, the Judge Panel believes this technology will be beneficial in promoting development of the solar energy optoelectronics technology and have significant influence on society and the solar energy optoelectronics industry. ITRI is well worth this excellent group award."

The most prestigious Solar Industry Awards of the solar energy industry is sponsored by the UK senior professional media group Angel Business Communication Ltd. Jointly sponsored by the PV Group formed by major players of the solar energy optoelectronics industry, the IPVEA representing the European and US photovoltaic producers and suppliers, the Dutch solar optoelectronics industry research institute SolarPlaza and UK's Loughborough University, the Solar Industry Awards is one of the most prestigious awards. Since its inception in 2009, every year the Judge Panel formed by the magazine chief editor and experts of the solar optoelectronics field, would select the most innovative and influential solar energy products, creative ideas and organizations for commendation. The reputed TS Space Systems of the UK won this group award in 2010 and the leading player of the solar energy optoelectronics industry First Solar won the same award in 2009.

Dr. Cheng-Wen Wu, General Director of ITRI's Information and Communications Research Laboratories, and who represented ITRI to receive the award, said, "ITRI has made every effort to research and develop computer and telecommunications system technology. We're happy to present you this excellent interdisciplinary achievement by integrating the synergy of the antenna and photovoltaic solar energy panel technology and created the technology which simultaneously improves the efficiency of the antenna and the solar energy panel, and developed the advanced world-leading green energy ICT equipment. In the future, we'll continue to develop newer production solutions. Presently we're looking for manufacturers and international cooperation partners for transfer of this technology."

Dr. Cheng-Wen Wu pointed out, the green energy antenna technology from the slim high-gain antenna researched and developed by ITRI has successfully integrated antenna transmission and solar panel power storage technology. It simultaneously improves the conversion efficiency of solar energy optoelectronics and the efficiency of antenna reception and emission. Not only has signal strength been doubled, it is a 10-fold increase in distance compared to the current international antenna technology, and with lower power consumption and can store power at the same time. Size of the antenna has shrunk by half and is applicable to the small handheld mobile devices (PDA, cell phone, personal GPS devices, etc.), medium and large station antenna. In the future, if this green energy antenna technology can replace the current 3G stations (with estimated power consumption approximately 500W). It is estimated that it can provide approx. 30% supplementary power which will effectively mitigate peak hour power consumption during day time and relieve loading of the power grid.
