Maybe It's in the Ketchup: Pittsburgh Named Most Flirtatious City in the Country, Social Networking Study Shows

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 14, 2011) - The results are in and a new study by Tagged, the social network for meeting new people, identified the Atlanta metro-area as the leading market for finding a romantic match. Pittsburgh was also called out as the flirtiest city in America's top 25 Designated Market Areas (DMAs).

Atlanta came out ahead of big markets like New York as the best large market in the nation to find a romantic match online, followed by St. Louis, Los Angeles, Houston and Dallas. Tagged found that Atlanta area residents enjoyed a high 61 average mutual matches over the summer of 2011, while St. Louis had 51 matches and LA residents had 50, followed by Houston at 48 and Dallas residents with 47 mutual matches.

*Flirtiness and the best cities to find a match were measured by Tagged across over 300,000 Americans in the top 25 DMAs. Specifically Tagged reviewed their online flirting or "winking" habits as well as their mutual matches during the summer of 2011 (June 1 - August 31, 2011).

Tagged researchers suggest why Pittsburgh is the flirtiest large market in the U.S. and why Atlanta is the best city to find a match:

  • While its roots are imbedded in the old steel mills of the last century, Pittsburgh's economy today is largely moving toward high-tech industries such as healthcare, education, technology, robotics and financial services, which tend to attract younger, more affluent professionals who are more interested in flirting and dating in their social lives. Perhaps a positive harbinger for the local economy.
  • Pittsburgh is a cultural melting pot: With its physical location straddling both the cultures of the East Coast and the Midwest, Pittsburgh borrows influences from numerous sources and locations, with many residents coming together with an interest in connecting online.
  • Pittsburgh is rich in art and culture: With many music venues, art organizations and dance events, there are great opportunities and locations for residents to flirt and just connect with one another.
  • Atlanta is growing by leaps and bounds: With a population approaching six million, Atlanta has added about 1.6 million residents in the last 10 years, with many new residents looking to meet new people and find a romantic or friendship match.
  • Atlanta is hot: Often referred to as "Hotlanta," Atlanta boasts large cultural diversity, numerous new clubs, theaters and a booming nightlife scene. Many Atlanta residents are looking to meet new matches and enjoy the flavor and richness of the area.
  • Atlanta is the place to be: In 2010, Atlanta was the seventh-most visited city in the country, with over 35 million visitors per year. Many visitors and vacationers look to meet up with local residents and other tourists while visiting the city.

"From flirting to dating, to simply meeting new friends, social networks such as enable people to connect with others around the world and in their region, state, city and neighborhood," said Steve Sarner, Vice President of Marketing for Tagged. "It's really not surprising that Pittsburgh leads the nation as the most flirtatious city with its strong sense of both East Coast and Midwest cultures. It also makes sense that Atlanta, with its cultural attractions and growing size, leads the country in residents looking to make a match."
