It's "Storytime at Rideau Hall" this Canada Day Weekend!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 29, 2012) - This Canada Day weekend, escape the downtown crowds and bring your family to Rideau Hall, the governor general's official residence and workplace in Ottawa.

On Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m., Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston, along with Ms. Suzanne Pinel, C.M., will launch "Storytime at Rideau Hall". In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Governor General's Literary Awards, families and visitors will be invited to settle in under a tree, at a picnic table or under the tent, and read great Canadian children's books along with Their Excellencies and Ms. Pinel.

Over the summer months, this new outdoor family reading activity will be hosted in collaboration with Frontier College, a Canadian non-profit organization that promotes literacy. Every Thursday and Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Frontier College volunteers will invite visitors and local families to come to their Reading Tent to read books and to participate in fun literacy activities. In addition, Rideau Hall will be bustling with the start of family activities, which will be offered throughout the summer.

On Canada Day, Sunday, July 1, visit the residence from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., stroll the grounds, bring a picnic, and enjoy the children's play structure. Also, don't miss our current exhibit From Far and Wide - Honouring Great Canadians, located in downtown Ottawa, across from Parliament Hill (90 Wellington), which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit celebrates Canada's national honours and the extraordinary contributions of Canadians from across the country and from all walks of life. It also includes the work of the Canadian Heraldic Authority in creating coats of arms and other national emblems.
