ITUS Subsidiary Receives Favorable Ruling in Microsoft Patent Dispute

MELVILLE, NY--(Marketwired - October 01, 2014) - ITUS Corporation ("ITUS") (OTCQB: ITUS), a company that builds and protects innovation, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Secure Web Conference Corporation ("SWCC"), received a favorable ruling from the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO") in an inter partes review proceeding in connection with one of SWCC's Key Based Web Conferencing Encryption patents (U.S. Pat. No. 6,856,687). The USPTO denied Microsoft's attempt to invalidate the '687 patent, which is part of a family of encryption patents developed in-house at ITUS.

Robert Berman, ITUS's President and CEO stated, "The inter partes review process is relatively new, and there have not been a lot of instances where the USPTO has declined to grant a petition based upon allegations such as those asserted by Microsoft. We are extremely encouraged by this result, which we believe is a testament to the skill of our legal team, and the quality of our patent."

An inter partes review is a proceeding created by the America Invents Act, in which a defendant has the opportunity to request that the USPTO review a patent's validity. Denials of an inter partes review petitions are rare, with more than 75% of all petitions being granted thus far. SWCC has a patent infringement lawsuit pending against Microsoft in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, alleging infingement of Microsoft's SKYPE and Lync web conferencing services. A claims constructuion hearing in the patent infringement lawsuit took place on September 23, 2014.
