Ixia Helps Demonstrate Industry-First Public Interoperability of Resilient Standard-Based MPLS-TP for MPLS 2010 Showcase

Ixia's MPLS-TP Full-Support Capability Enables Interoperability Test

CALABASAS, CA--(Marketwire - November 10, 2010) - Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), a leading, global provider of converged IP network test solutions, today announced that they have demonstrated the viability of an MPLS-TP protocol suite at Isocore's network and telecommunications test and validation lab, showcasing network device interoperability. This test validates the functionality and interoperability of critical MPLS features and signifies the progress and maturity of the IETF draft. The test was a significant milestone in the development of MPLS-TP and included major network equipment vendors.

Ixia test ports were used to simulate MPLS and MPLS-TP network topologies around vendors' devices by generating and processing MPLS-TP protocol messages, generating data traffic over MPLS-TP Label Switch Paths (LSPs), and providing a full decode of MPLS-TP LSP encapsulated control plane messages for rapid troubleshooting. This enabled Isocore to verify:

  • The establishment of MPLS-TP static LSPs across vendor equipment
  • MPLS-TP data plane verification
  • The exchange of bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD) continuity check (CC) messages at different intervals between vendor equipment
  • The use of BFD CC to identify network failures
  • The use of protection switching coordination (PSC) to switch traffic from working to protected paths during network failure
  • The functionality of various protection modes

MPLS-TP adds transport-like operation, OAM, and resilience to carrier-class MPLS technology -- making it an attractive option for access, aggregation, and backhaul networks supporting broadband, business, and mobility services.
