Jane Phillips Medical Center Adopts Latest O.R. Safety Technology

ClearCount System, Exclusively Distributed by Medline, Both Counts and Detects Surgical Sponges

MUNDELEIN, IL--(Marketwire - November 9, 2010) -  ClearCount Medical Solutions and Medline Industries, Inc. today announced the successful conversion of one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation for patient safety. Bartlesville, OK-based Jane Phillips Medical Center (JPMC) has implemented SmartWand-DTX, the latest and most comprehensive radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to prevent retained surgical sponge incidents. JPMC upgraded to ClearCount's RFID-based platform that uniquely counts and detects all surgical sponges used during hospital procedures.

"We take our commitment to improving patient safety very seriously," said Scott E. Williams, DO, Chief of Surgery. "As a surgeon, I appreciate the additional reassurance that comes from using the most up-to-date, sophisticated technology to increase patient safety."

JPMC worked closely with ClearCount and Medline to implement the SmartWand-DTX in all operating rooms, replacing a more limited system that did not provide unique identification of detected sponges nor provide electronic verification of the sponge counting process.

"This technology allows our clinical associates to operate at an exceptional level of patient safety," said Dellene Nielson, RN, OR Clinical Manager. "They truly appreciate the ability to electronically verify our manual counting procedures."

"We're pleased to add Jane Phillips Medical Center to our rapidly expanding customer base," said David Palmer, Chief Executive Officer of ClearCount. "Their selection of our safety technology demonstrates a national trend in how hospitals are taking patient safety to a higher level."

Retained surgical sponges are a big problem and are capturing attention throughout the medical field as the most frequent and costly surgical "never event." In July, 2010, new Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Recommended Practices for the Prevention of Retained Surgical Items highlighted that membership may consider use of adjunct technologies to enhance surgical count procedures in order to avoid retained sponge incidents.
