January Housing Starts Higher in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2011) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 53 units in January, up more than three times from the 16 units begun in January 2010.

"This was a propitious start to the year, boosting starts above the rising trend," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "With fewer new listings on the resale market and a limited number of new homes available for sale, rising housing demand is stimulating new construction," added Stevenson.

Single-detached homes accounted for 21 of the starts along with 2 semi-detached units and 30 row units. All municipalities in the CMA recorded higher construction in January 2011 than the same month last year.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions. 1Statistics Canada defines a census metropolitan area (CMA) as one or more adjacent municipalities integrated with an urban core. A CMA must have a total population of at least 100,000 of which 50,000 or more must live in the urban core
