January Housing Starts in New Brunswick

MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2012) - Residential construction activity in New Brunswick's urban centres increased in January according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data1 indicate that a total of 139 starts were recorded during the month compared to 52 starts for the same period in 2011.

"The overall increase in total housing starts recorded in January was mainly the result of a large number of apartment starts recorded in the Moncton CMA," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Multiple starts in January totalled 95 units in provincial urban centres, up from last year's monthly total of 4 units. Single starts were down slightly to 44 units. Last year, 48 single starts were recorded in January.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in January were up 24 per cent to 12,220 units compared to 9,823 a year ago. Single-detached starts increased one per cent to 3,596 units, while multiple starts increased 37 per cent to 8,624 units in January. In the Atlantic region, 440 new units were started compared to 500 during January 2011.
