JDSU Demonstrates QSFP+ Modules for 40G Transmissions in Enterprise, LAN and SAN Networks

Compact Modules to Provide Affordable and Efficient Solutions for Client-Side Transmission

MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 19, 2011) - JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) today announced that it is demonstrating quad small form factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) transceiver modules for 40G optical transmissions of up to 10 kilometers in enterprise, local area (LAN) and storage area networks (SAN). Leveraging key building blocks from JDSU's optical communications portfolio, the new QSFP+ modules are dramatically smaller and provide lower power dissipation compared to older solutions.

The new modules for both short reach and long reach applications are currently being sampled with network equipment manufacturers and companies focused on high-speed computing solutions. JDSU expects to have the products commercially available by the first quarter of 2012.

Increasing use of cloud computing, online video, voice over IP (VOIP) and other internet applications are driving large amounts of content through enterprise, LAN and SAN, and telecom networks. Network operators are under pressure to deploy high performance and high density optical products to support 40G and 100G bitrates while continuing to drive down operating expenses.

"Our continued focus on R&D and ability to leverage our industry-leading optical communications portfolio has allowed JDSU to leapfrog the market with these new QSFP+ modules," said Alan Lowe, president of the CCOP segment at JDSU. "It is another example of our commitment to provide a complete range of client-side and line-side optical solutions that are affordable and efficient for 40G networks and beyond."

QSFP+ Module for Long Reach Applications
The QSFP+ long reach module generates and modulates four different wavelengths of light at 10G speeds and combines them into a single optical fiber for client-side network transmission. It is also capable of receiving the four light channels and reconstructing the 40G signal, providing full transceiver capability at 40G for distances up to 10 kilometers.

QSFP+ Module for Short Reach Applications
To support shorter distances of less than 100 meters, JDSU has also developed the QSFP+ short reach module. It uses JDSU vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) technology to generate four different optical signals, each modulated at 10G and transmitted over ribbon fiber. The module is also able to receive this incoming light and reconstruct the 40G data stream to provide a full transceiver solution. It is designed to supports both 40GE and OTU3 protocols.

QSFP+ Benefits

  • Compact size -- QSFP+ is about the size of a pack of a gum compared to older and significantly larger CFP modules, saving value real estate in data centers.
  • Hot pluggable -- Network operators can add new QSFP+ modules as more bandwidth is required in the network without interruption to network service.
  • Lower power dissipation -- Less than 3.5 Watts of power dissipation compared to 8 Watts in older CFP modules.
  • High performance -- Leverages JDSU's extensive optical communications technology portfolio and photonic integration expertise.
  • Long reach -- Up to 10 kilometers of reach for client-side optical transmissions in enterprise, LAN, SAN and telecom networks.

A demonstration of the QSFP+ module will be available for viewing at JDSU Booth # 1622 during the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Geneva, Switzerland from Sept. 19 - 21, 2011.
