Jessica Shepley and Marie-Josee Rouleau Lead After First Round at the 2006 Canadian PGA Women's Championship Presented by Aquafina Bottled Water

OSHAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 15, 2006) -

Attention Editors: Competitors in contention from Toronto, St. Lambert, Que., and Drayton Valley, Alta.

Feeding off each other's momentum, Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., and Marie-Josee Rouleau of St. Lambert, Que., both fired two-under par 70 to lead after the first round of the Canadian PGA Women's Championship Presented by Aquafina Bottled Water at Oshawa Golf & Curling Club.

Shepley had a steady round with four birdies and only two bogies on the par-5 4th and the par-5 11th. Birdies on holes 1, 6, 13 and 18 propelled the 23-year-old graduate of the University of Tennessee to the top of the leaderboard.

Rouleau, a member of the European Ladies Tour, started off like a rocket with four birdies on the front nine en route to a three-under par 33, but slowed down on the back nine with a one-over 37.

"I'm just happy to be in contention heading in to tomorrow," said Shepley, the 2001 Ontario Women's Amateur Champion. "I have been playing solid most of the summer and a great round tomorrow might put an exclamation point on the year."

Shepley had only one day off after playing all four rounds of last week's CN Canadian Women's Open where she was one of six Canadians to make the cut. "It's been a busy few weeks for me but I've loved every minute of it," said Shepley, who is fifth on the CN Women's Tour Order of Merit and 57th on the Duramed Futures Tour Order of Merit.

Rouleau said she and Shepley-her playing partner-got in a good groove during her first round.

"I putted really well this morning and I have a lot of confidence with my putter for the final round," said Rouleau, 33 a two-time winner of the Canadian Women's Tour Order of Merit.

Rouleau, who also played in last week's CN Canadian Women's Open, is no stranger to national championships, having played in two U.S. Women's Opens and two Women's British Open Championships.

"I really hope I can use some of my experience to come out and play great tomorrow," said Rouleau, who currently sits 33rd on the Duramed Futures Tour Order of Merit. "The course is great and the greens are almost perfect so it will be fun to play in the final group tomorrow."

Corina Kelepouris of Drayton Valley, Alta., sits two shots back after firing a one-over par 73. Kelepouris, who played in her third Canadian Women's Open last week, continued to struggle with her driver at Oshawa.

"I've really had to scramble my way around the course lately because of my driver problems," stated Kelepouris, who is second on the CN Women's Tour Order of Merit. "If I can get my driver working tomorrow I think I can put myself in position to make some birdies and a run at the lead."

Defending champion Lorna Miedema of Calgary struggled on Tuesday to a 78. The low amateur for the day was Sue Kim of Langley, BC with a 76.
