Jewish Communities of Western CT: "Expanding the Circle of Peace"

August 29th and 30th 2009

SOUTHBURY, CT--(Marketwire - August 6, 2009) - In late August, the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut will be bringing two leaders to CT from the Middle East -- an Israeli and a Palestinian -- to share their successful model for peaceful coexistence, based on social and economic development. The leaders come from an Israeli region that has been an epicenter of conflict for years; their collaborative efforts are truly serving as a beacon of hope. Over several days, Mayor Daniel Attar of Gilboa, in Northern Israel, and Governor Qaddoura Moussa of Jenin, in the West Bank, will participate in a series of events in Connecticut to promote cross-cultural understanding between peoples seeking peace and cooperation. This is Governor Moussa's first trip to the U.S. President Abbas gave authority for this short visit after he will return back to the PA directly.

A story on A1 of the Times on September 11, 2008, titled "A West Bank Ruin, Reborn as a Peace Beacon," highlighted the relationship between Daniel Attar and his deputy mayor, who is an Arab Israeli, and Qaddoura Moussa. The two Gilboa mayors and the Jenin governor have been developing economic ties between their communities, aimed at increasing stability in the region. Leaders of the Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut met with the three leaders last November to explore opportunities for the North American Jewish community to assist.

The series of events will include a public forum as well as an event for Federation members. The mayor and governor will also meet with a variety of Jewish community and business leaders to further plans for assistance from North America.

This is a landmark initiative for our Jewish community, and one that can serve as an example to those involved in conflict anywhere in the world. Our goal is a better future for Israel and her neighbors.
