Jim Ronca of Anapol Schwartz Named Among Co-Lead Counsel for Mirena MDL

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwired - Jul 2, 2013) - Anapol Schwartz shareholder Jim Ronca was appointed Plaintiff's Co-lead Counsel in the Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2434) on May 22, 2013. The proceeding will be presided over by Judge Cathy Seibel in the United States District Court Southern District of New York.

Co-lead counsel represents all Mirena multidistrict litigation (MDL) plaintiffs from across the country in hearings and conferences before the Court, appoints Plaintiff's Steering Committee and Executive Committee members, and enforces the orders of Judge Seibel.

Ronca will also work with members of the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee to conduct the litigation on behalf of the plaintiffs with respect to common issues. He and fellow Mirena co-lead counsel members Fred Thompson III and Matthew J. McCauley will organize and administer the case from the plaintiffs' side, file and argue legal motions, meet and confer with the defendants' lawyers on behalf of all plaintiffs, examine witnesses and introduce evidence at hearings. They will also consult with experts and inform plaintiffs' counsel about the litigation progress.

"Being named co-lead counsel is a big responsibility," Ronca said. "The claims of more than 1,000 women who have been injured by this product depend on the work done by the Plaintiffs' Steering Committee under the direction of the co-lead counsel."

Mirena© is a T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) inserted for up to five years as a contraceptive. Plaintiffs claim that after insertion and confirmation by a doctor that the device was inserted properly and is in the right location, Mirena can perforate the uterus and migrate into other areas of the pelvis or abdomen and require surgical removal. Plaintiffs allege manufacturer Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals should have warned doctors and their patients of the risk of late perforation and migration of a device designed to stay in the body so long.

Ronca has been named co-lead counsel in three national MDLs: In re Trasylol Products Liability litigation consolidated in the Southern District of Florida, In re Zimmer NexGen Products Liability Litigation in the Northern District of Illinois, and In re Mirena Products Liability Litigation in the Southern District of New York. Ronca has served in various capacities in other national pharmaceutical and medical device litigations.
