Identity Theft Is a Growing Threat -- Fight Back With Free Help

ARLINGTON, VA and SILVER SPRING, MD--(Marketwire - October 13, 2010) -  Did you know that even the most responsible of us can become a victim of identity theft? The NFCC (National Foundation for Credit Counseling) and the Council of Better Business Bureaus are encouraging folks to fight identity theft by taking part in the 3rd Annual Protect Your Identity Week, October 17-23.

Although Protect Your Identity Week is coming up, we really must continue to protect ourselves year round. It's scary that last year alone 11.1 million people became victims, (a 12.5 percent increase over the previous year)! We may be putting ourselves at risk by simply writing a check, using a credit card or even our ATM cards; so our strongest weapon against such identity theft really is education.

So how can you take advantage of PYIW this year?

  • There will be more than 175 free events in communities across the country offering educational workshops, credit report reviews, and paper shredding. You can find an event using this event map!
  • Easy to follow tips, resources and a self-assessment quiz to determine your own personal risk of identity theft are all available at the Protect Your ID Now website as well.
  • Daily blogs will be available from nationally known ID theft expert and McAfee consultant, Robert Siciliano, which can be read here:
  • And excitingly this year, Cintas Corporation is providing free paper shredding at events nationwide with the goal of making the Guinness Book of World Records for the most paper collected in a 24-hour period!
  • Finally, be sure to get involved with PYIW on Facebook and Twitter, where NFCC will provide daily tips and PYIW articles all throughout the month.

"Last year, tens of thousands of people across the country benefited from the events and resources provided through Protect Your Identity Week.  Additionally, more than 500 tons of sensitive documents were shredded, all for free," said Susan C. Keating, president and CEO of the NFCC. "This year, we anticipate having an even larger impact due to the increased number of events and resources available to consumers.  For instance, at some shredding events participants can even take part in breaking a Guinness world record.  This in itself should create a lot of interest."

Please join the fight by encouraging your friends and family to visit and learn more about getting involved in National Protect Your Identity Week events.
