Joliet Junior College Stops Spam and Phishing With MailFrontier Appliance

MailFrontier Eliminates Email Threats in 30,000 Student and Faculty Email Inboxes

PALO ALTO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 3, 2005 -- MailFrontier™, a leader in email security, today announced Joliet Junior College, America's oldest public community college, has implemented MailFrontier Gateway™ Appliance to protect its students and staff against a growing number of email threats, including spam, phishing and directory harvest attacks. Joliet joins MailFrontier's list of higher education customers, including George Mason University and Northcentral University.

With a demanding, high-volume email environment, more than 75 percent of incoming email at Joliet was spam, and unwanted content was becoming a significant issue for the organization. The college needed to find a way to protect its students, staff and instructors. Joliet was using a keyword filter to block unwanted email, but the solution was not effective at blocking the more than 500,000 spam emails coming in each month. Phishing attacks were also increasing in volume, threatening email security for the college's wide range of users.

Joliet looked for a more effective solution to meet the different needs of more than 30,000 student and staff email accounts. Joliet evaluated different offerings and selected MailFrontier for its ease-of-administration and end-user flexibility. MailFrontier Gateway Appliance deployed immediately at the network perimeter, stopping email threats before they reached critical internal systems.

According to David Agazzi, vice president of business services at Joliet Junior College, "One morning we plugged MailFrontier Gateway Appliance in, and the next thing I knew people were stopping me in the hallway and asking 'where did the spam go?' MailFrontier completely exceeded our expectations, it has stopped unwanted spam and phishing emails to protects our students and staff."

To minimize demands on the IT department, Joliet implemented end-user junk box summaries providing end users with the ability to review their email quarantine, for maximum control. MailFrontier Gateway Appliance provides complete protection for email users, blocking unwanted email at the perimeter. At the same time, MailFrontier Gateway Appliance requires virtually no IT administration. Finally, with the college's diverse user-base and turnover in students, MailFrontier gives Joliet an email protection solution that allows for unlimited users. "With our enterprise license and the appliance's ease-of-use, MailFrontier gives us a 'set it and forget it' solution to unwanted email."
