Backbench Labour Party deputy leadership candidate, Jon Cruddas MP has received the backing of former deputy leader Roy Hattersley. The endorsement tops off a week where Jon Cruddas has hit the ground running in his campaign - picking up the support of 51 MPs and MEPs, the nomination of Unite, Britain's biggest union, and support from the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone.

Writing in his column for the Times, Hattersley called for the post of deputy prime minister to be scrapped. He argued that, "the party in desperate need of revival" and that the next deputy leader "should be a responsibly independent voice, not an echo. That is the role that Jon Cruddas would occupy as deputy leader". He concludes by saying, "He gets my vote."

Jon Trickett, MP, Jon Cruddas' Campaign Manager in Parliament, said:

"Roy is right to say that Labour needs a full-time deputy leader dedicated to renewing the party. His backing, on top of all the other support Jon Cruddas is getting, shows that we have a campaign with real momentum. No other candidate can point to such a groundswell of support - that's because Jon offers change and renewal, not more of the same".

Jon Cruddas is MP for Dagenham. Jon is standing as a candidate for deputy leader of the Labour Party. For more information on Jon Cruddas' deputy leadership campaign visit www.joncruddas.org.uk.
