Joyent and 10gen Strengthen Partnership Around MongoDB and SmartOS

Unique Partnership Offers Developers the Next Generation of Tools to Build High Performance, Flexible and Scalable Applications

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 16, 2012) - Joyent, the high-performance cloud company, and 10gen (the MongoDB company) today announced product/technology enhancements to increase performance, flexibility and scalability. The two companies also joined together with leading technology experts MongoLab, Nodejitsu and Clock to create NodeStack Online -- a unique web conference series to explore development stack that combines the benefits and power of Node.js, MongoDB and SmartOS.

The partnership brings together Joyent's high-performance virtual operating system, SmartOS, with 10gen's agile and scalable NoSQL database, MongoDB -- providing developers and enterprises the tools they need to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated applications. MongoDB has been optimized on a Joyent SmartOS Machine to provide flexibility, ease of use and high performance; it can also be deployed on the Joyent Public Cloud with a single click.

"SmartOS provides an excellent platform for running MongoDB," said Jared Rosoff, director of product marketing at 10gen. "With its strong history of performance and reliability, along with tools like ZFS and DTrace, SmartOS offers MongoDB users consistently fast performance, non-stop availability, and unparalleled visibility into system behavior."

The 10gen and Joyent partnership benefits include:

  • Reliability. Joyent has updated the MongoDB Smart Appliance available on the Joyent Public Cloud to deploy MongoDB. This build can be deployed in a single click and has been optimized to improve reliability.
  • Analytics. SmartOS machines have access to powerful analytics, which Joyent provides free to customers using the Joyent Public Cloud. This robust introspection tool allows users to pinpoint latency and ensure that applications are performing at their optimum level. This optimized appliance also offers simple MongoDB replication and tooling.
  • Performance. By joining MongoDB with SmartOS, users can now scale many small data stores across multiple machines and datacenters leveraging Joyent's advanced I/O and CPU bursting capabilities. Coupled with MongoDB's tag-aware sharding, the resulting stack allows users to instantly scale up or out depending on application demands.
  • Speed. The Joyent SmartOS is built for enterprise scale while maintaining the leanest foundation for running high-performance applications. It offers unique caching capabilities with Arc Cache that intelligently ensures that the most used, and recently used, data objects are available to the system from memory. This ensures the fastest response time possible.
  • Node.js. By adding Node.js -- a software runtime designed for writing highly scalable internet applications -- to the integration, applications have a stack (NodeStack) that offers flexibility at all levels of scale, performance and management while reducing latency. Written in JavaScript, Node.js uses event-driven, asynchronous I/O to minimize overhead and maximize scalability. When these unique features are mixed with the data and server distribution of MongoDB and SmartOS the options for application architecture are endless.

"Today's sophisticated applications are more resource-intensive than ever, and they're being developed faster than development tools can keep up," said Jason Hoffman, founder and CTO, Joyent. "By bringing together MongoDB with SmartOS and Node.js, we've created the most robust, scalable and reliable end-to-end solution on the market, helping developers keep pace with the rapidly evolving and complex demands of today's applications."

The inaugural NodeStack Online session will take place on October 17, 2012. Please join us - http://www.nodestack.org/
