Joyent Announces SmartOS With KVM: an Open Source, Modern Operating System

KVM on SmartOS Provides Entrepreneurs and Enterprises Highest Performance and Profit Potential Through Best of Breed Cloud Technologies

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 15, 2011) - Joyent, the global provider of cloud computing software and services, today announced that it has ported KVM to its operating system, SmartOS. SmartOS turns any server into a highly efficient, multi-tenant application hosting platform. The open source project offers innovative tools for application developers looking for reliable, resilient storage and efficient virtualization that Joyent has tuned and hardened for modern, data-intensive real-time (DIRTy) application deployment.

Joyent is the only vendor that offers enterprises and developers the best of both virtualization worlds in a single operating system: One can employ hardware virtualization with KVM when there are operating system dependencies, and operating system-level virtualization when the language runtime is important, as in a Platform as a Service (PaaS) or Software as a Service (SaaS) offering. With Joyent's operating system-level virtualization, companies are able to host more users on a single server, realizing greater efficiency and increased revenue potential while saving on unnecessary hardware investments.

Joyent SmartOS delivers reliable and resilient local enterprise- and carrier-grade storage through the use of ZFS, the combined file system and logical volume manager that gives dedicated and guaranteed access to file systems in a multi-tenant environment. A data store with no single point of failure, ZFS allows developers and their customers peace of mind that their data is safe and secure.

Joyent SmartOS includes DTrace technology, a core element of the operating system that provides increased visibility and aids in troubleshooting on any level of the application stack. With DTrace, developers have unprecedented observability and insight, safeguarding SLAs and creating a collaborative environment for troubleshooting and fixing problems in real-time.

The combination of virtualization options, dedicated, reliable storage with no single point of failure, and observability throughout the stack collectively constitutes a second-generation, carrier-grade operating system that can stand up to the growing performance and scalability demands in the cloud, especially those involving machine-to-machine computing.

"Joyent SmartOS is the first hypervisor platform to emerge in five years, and it's the only cloud server solution that can manage both KVM hardware virtualization and operating system-level virtualization on a single OS," said Jason Hoffman, founder and chief scientist of Joyent. "This combination of virtualization options, data consistency through ZFS and access to DTrace for rapid troubleshooting, is the most powerful and efficient collection of technologies in cloud application development. I invite developers who use VMWare, Citrix, Red Hat or Microsoft hypervisor tools to try this open source package."

Joyent is a member of the Open Virtualization Alliance, an association dedicated to the awareness and adoption of KVM as an open virtualization alternative to proprietary solutions.
