Joyent Announces Update to SmartDataCenter 6, the Next-Generation Cloud Operating System for Service Providers; Offers Business Enablement Programs

Single Pane View Enables Service Providers to Deliver Wide Variety of Cloud Services to Customers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 23, 2011) - Joyent, the leading global provider of cloud computing solutions and technologies, today announced an update to its next-generation cloud software, SmartDataCenter, including enhancements that allow Service Providers to deliver a more flexible range of offerings to their customers, resulting in better performance for customers and better business results for providers. Joyent also announced that it will add two Service Provider business packages to accelerate the technical, sales and marketing aspects of standing up and offering cloud services to customers.

SmartDataCenter 6.1 gives Service Providers the flexibility to provide a spectrum of cloud offerings to customers, from a premium dedicated local storage product at the high-end, to support for legacy applications made possible by hardware virtualization in the mid-range, to lowest-cost multi-tenancy PaaS offerings made possible by operating system virtualization at the low end. This spectrum of offerings can be managed in a single pane view from both the underlying APIs as well as the Operator and Customer Portals, giving Service Providers the ability to fine-tune offerings that meet customer needs -- whether for legacy apps or next-generation apps -- while maximizing revenue and profit.

"Service Providers have been able to simplify the management of their infrastructure, keep their costs in check, and provide strong service levels to their customers with SmartDataCenter 6," said David Young, CEO, Joyent. "This release gives Service Providers even more control over their cloud business through additional platform capabilities that they can offer to customers while ensuring their own financial return. SmartDataCenter 6.1 is the only cloud service that provides this level of control and breadth of offering."

SmartDataCenter is the cloud operating system that is used by thousands of customers on (Joyent's public cloud) and Dell Data Center Solutions (DCS). Service Providers deploying SmartDataCenter 6.1 are able to manage multi-tenant cloud environments through a single development platform that enables the data center to work like a single unified computer allowing for optimal data center management.

SmartDataCenter 6.1 offers enterprises and game, media, social and mobile service providers:

  • A referencecustomer portal that demonstrates service provider savings on technology and administrative costs by enabling self-provisioning
  • An operator portal that enables service providers to allocate compute resources, visualize performance, manage virtual servers, and monitor resource allocation
  • Analytics across data centers and up and down the software stack that identify latency or other problems before downtime or outages occur
