Jr. Economic Club of Canada launches "Your Money, Your Wellness" Game and Lesson Plan

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 16, 2014) - On May 16, 2014 at 8:45 a.m., The Junior Economic Club of Canada (JrECC) in partnership with Sun Life Financial and Canadian Diabetes Association will launch the "Your Money Your Wellness" (YMYW) game at the Toronto Stock Exchange. The YMYW lesson plan introduces students and teachers to the link between physical and financial well-being to help animate youth across Canada to understand the basics of health, wealth and personal money management.

"Teaching young Canadians about the link between their health and wealth is a critical lesson for the future prosperity of this nation. Unhealthy living is expensive and can put a financial burden on individuals, families, businesses and governments," said Tom Reid, Senior Vice-President of Group Retirement Services of Sun Life Financial. "That's why we are proud to support the YMYW game and lesson plan. Programs like these help ensure that the next generation of leaders is not only financially literate, but healthy too."

The day will commence with a discussion led by Tom Reid on the significance of the YMYW launch with the JrECC and the Canadian Diabetes Association. "In Canada, more than nine million people live with diabetes or pre-diabetes. It's financially demanding, and the best approach is to prevent it through healthy living and health education," said Rick Blinkstead, President of the Canadian Diabetes Association. "Educating young Canadians on the connection between healthy living and financial stability is vitally important. That's why we are a proud partner of the Jr. Economic Club's YMYW game launch."

Minister of State (Finance), Kevin Sorenson, will then speak about the significance of financial literacy for young Canadians, followed by an address from the Minister of Labour, Kellie Leitch, on the correlation between healthy people and a healthy economy. Opening addresses will conclude with a video from the Minister of Health, Rona Ambrose on behalf of Health Canada, regarding the economic benefits of healthy living.

After the opening addresses, Rhiannon Traill, president and CEO of the Economic Club of Canada will guide the students and guests through the YMYW lesson plan, and then students will be divided into two teams lead by Minister Sorenson, Tom Reid, Minister Leitch and Rick Blickstead. "The game was designed to be simple, informative and high energy. I love watching students get excited about learning with us. It's so much fun!" said Rhiannon Traill. Following the game the media will have an opportunity to interview select students and guest speakers.

The Jr. Economic Club of Canada was created in 2011 by Rhiannon Traill with the goal of making young Canadians financially literate. Over the last three years, with title sponsor The Investment Funds Institute of Canada, the JrECC has accepted over 6000 high school students and has given out over $35,000.00 in academic scholarships. The YMYW game, a module of the JrECC, has been tested successfully among three different age groups. The results have been incredibly encouraging. Students are actively engaged and teachers are requesting take away information to duplicate the lesson plans in the classroom.
