Judicial Recount to Be Held in the Electoral District of Egmont

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 17, 2008) - The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, announced today that there will be a judicial recount of the votes in the electoral district of Egmont (Prince Edward Island). Following validation of the results in the electoral district, the difference between the two leading candidates was 62 votes. The candidate who came in second requested the recount.

The recount is scheduled to begin on October 23, 2008. All candidates may attend, together with three of their representatives. The count will start at 9:30 a.m. at the court house in Summerside at 108 Central Street. The recount will be conducted by a judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island (Trial Division). The results of the recount will be published on the Elections Canada Web site shortly after the recount is completed.

Elections Canada is an independent body set up by Parliament.
