Judson Church Launches Performance Series MAGIC TIME

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - February 15, 2011) - Judson Memorial Church invites you to experience MAGIC TIME, a new monthly series featuring staged readings of fresh plays by New York City's most astonishing creative voices.

The inaugural MAGIC TIME will happen Wednesday, February 23rd in Judson's historic meeting room, located at 55 Washington Square South in the heart of Greenwich Village. This event is free to the public and doors open at 7 p.m.

MAGIC TIME's first performer is playwright Isaac Oliver, whose work includes Eddie Goshen is Dead, Long Dirty Jokes, and Electra in a One-Piece. His blog, He Who Laughs, or The Complete Idiot's Guide to Intimacy, can be read at www.hewholaughs.com.

In the 1960s, New York City's growing population of playwrights found three new homes for their explosive work, Caffe Cino, La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, and Judson Church's own Judson Poets' Theater. The forces behind these establishments -- Joe Cino, Ellen Stewart, and Al Carmines -- each had a unique vision that gave rise to what we now call the Off-Off-Broadway theater movement. MAGIC TIME (inspired by Cino's nightly introduction to his shows: "It's Magic Time!") both celebrates this legacy and supports the current Off-Off-Broadway world.

Each month, MAGIC TIME will provide new playwrights with free space, a small stipend, and whatever magic we can muster to conjure his or her vision to life in the very space where it all began. What results is a party with a brand new play smack-dab in the middle of it. Subsequent MAGIC TIME performances will occur on the 4th Wednesday of every month.
