June Housing Starts Higher in Guelph

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) -The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released preliminary housing starts data for the Guelph Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) today. Builders started 288 dwellings in the second quarter of 2010, more than double the 110 units started in the same quarter last year.

Builders poured 139 foundations for single-detached homes in the second quarter, up from the 60 units started in the second quarter of 2009. Townhouse starts jumped to 131 units from the 22 units started a year earlier, while apartment starts remained unchanged. For the first half of 2010, housing starts in the Guelph CMA have almost tripled from the same time last year due to the increase in detached, townhome and apartment starts.

"The first half of this year has been busy for homebuilders due to the strong demand for new homes from buyers who brought their home purchases forward," said Erica McLerie CMHC Senior Market Analyst. "To avoid expected mortgage rate increases and HST implementation on July 1, some new homebuyers purchased in the last few months of 2009 and early 2010 and these sales translated into starts during the second quarter."

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
