June Housing Starts Higher in St. Catharines-Niagara

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - Preliminary data for June 2010 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the St. Catharines-Niagara Census Metropolitan Area(1) (CMA) show an increase in housing starts to 134 units.

Housing starts in June were at the strongest pace since September 2008 and were boosted by the largest number of single-detached homes built in a month since July 2006. Six rental townhouse units were added in June in the City of St. Catharines. On a year-to-date basis, housing starts were 55 per cent above last year's level. Compared to the same period last year, new home construction was up in all municipalities except in Port Colborne. Housing starts in Niagara Region advanced 64 per cent due to a higher level of activity in both Grimsby and West Lincoln.

"Housing starts in June reversed the trend of the previous two months, showing strength not only when compared to earlier this year, but also from a historical perspective," said Ashot Karapetyan, Market Analyst with CMHC. "Tight resale market conditions prompted many move-up buyers to look for a home in the new housing segment," added Karapetyan.
