June Housing Starts in Halifax

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - New residential construction in Halifax increased last month compared to June 2010 according to preliminary data1 released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 202 housing starts last month, compared to 125 recorded in June of 2010.

"New home construction in Halifax increased in June compared to last year," said Matthew Gilmore, senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "There was continued strong support this month from multiple starts, with this segment of the new homes market up more than twice the level recorded last year," Gilmore said. "The single detached segment of the market remained stable in June with one per cent growth," Gilmore added.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in June were up four per cent to 15,982 units compared to last year's total of 15,346. Single-detached starts declined seven per cent to 7,287 units, while multiple starts increased 16 per cent to 8,695 units in 2011. In the Atlantic region, 1,051 new units were started in June 2011 compared to 1,012 units during the same period in 2010.
