MONCTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - Residential construction in New Brunswick's urban centres was lower in June according to figures released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Preliminary data(1) indicate that a total of 350 starts were recorded during the month compared to 375 starts for the same period in 2010.
"The decline in housing starts observed in June was due to a reduction in multiple starts, as single starts in provincial urban centres for the month of June were essentially unchanged from last year ," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New Brunswick. Single starts were up one per cent in June, with a total of 167 units compared to 165 during the same month last year. Year-to-date, single starts have declined 27 per cent to 403 units.
In June, multiple starts were down 13 per cent to 183 units. Year-to date, multiple starts are down 34 per cent from last year's total of 653 units."Apartment starts continue to trail last year's pace to the end of June, contributing to the overall decline in new home construction activity observed in the province," added Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in June were up four per cent to 15,982 units compared to last year's total of 15,346. Single-detached starts were down seven per cent to 7,287 units, while multiple starts were up 16 per cent to 8,695 units this year. In the Atlantic region, 1,051 new units were started in June 2011 compared to 1,012 units during the same period in 2010.
