June Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 74 units in June, nearly double the 39 units started in June 2009. 

"More homes are being built to satisfy growing demand in the Windsor market," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "This is the strongest first half for residential construction locally since 2006," added Stevenson.

Single-detached homes represented the majority of all starts in the Windsor area in June 2010. They doubled to 66 units versus 33 units in June 2009. Construction also began on four semi-detached homes and four townhomes. Year-to-date, builders started 211 single-detached homes, 30 townhouse units and 16 apartment units in the Windsor CMA, up 95 per cent from the same period in 2009.
