SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - September 20, 2010) -  Juniper Networks® (NYSE: JNPR) today published its first annual Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability Report, titled "The New Network -- Changing the World," highlighting the company's initiatives around green IT, employee and community engagement and sustainable business operations around the world.

"With continued resource depletion and the rising of greenhouse gas emissions, we can drive improved economics and quality of life by using resources more productively," said Mark Bauhaus, executive vice president and general manager, Service Layer Technologies Business Group and leader of the CSR Executive Council at Juniper Networks. "Sustainable and efficient operations are critical to the success of businesses today. With the amount of information available anytime and anywhere, we can now ensure that economic and social opportunities are within everyone's reach. Advances in the network will continue to contribute to a more environmentally responsible world, and Juniper Networks will be at the forefront for a more sustainable environment."

Juniper is committed to driving advances in networking that will help as we collectively tackle the difficult economic and environmental problems facing the world today. The new network is changing the way we think, connect and conduct business around the world. Juniper is helping organizations make the most of these new, complex changes in an effort to support more sustainable social and economic models that are beneficial to all.

"Successful businesses care not only about driving profitability, but making sure they operate in a socially responsible way," said Brad Minnis, director of environmental health and safety, Juniper Networks. "Juniper's mission of driving innovation in a global economy is fueled by how we operate our business in supporting responsible choices to enable a sustainable future. We know there is more work to do and we are committed to this for the long term."

Report highlights include:

  • Since 2008, Juniper has reduced the number of physical servers that are in the lab and data center environments with virtual servers; dramatically reducing the company's server footprint by 30 percent and subsequent energy consumption.
  • In 2009, almost 60 percent of Juniper's largest suppliers participated in Carbon Disclosure Forum's Supply Chain Leadership Program, which is designed to provide visibility into the emissions of the supply chain.
  • Juniper invests more than $800 million annually in research and development to continuously improve product designs and help customers integrate sustainable networking principles into their own operations. For example, the Juniper Networks EX4200 and EX8200 switches use roughly 8-10 percent less power than similar competitive platforms.
  • Juniper's simplified data center network design requires fewer devices and interconnections, leading to improved efficiencies, power and cooling. For example, in a data center of 3,000 GbE attached servers, a simplified design with Juniper Networks EX Series switches consumes more than 40 percent less power than a traditional design based on a three-layer architecture.
  • Juniper is leading by example and starting to measure and report on the standardized Energy Consumption Rating (ECR) efficiency metric for each defined product class.
  • Since 2004, we have participated in the Carbon Disclosure Project reporting on our Scope 1-3 emissions as a way to identify opportunities for greater efficiencies in managing our carbon footprint.
