K-12 Schools Win Supreme Storage Makeover Grant Contest

Lowndes High School of Valdosta, GA Earns Grand Prize of One Free Year of School Web Lockers Web-Based File Sharing and Storage; Six Other Schools Win School Web Lockers Discounts

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - January 13, 2011) - K-12 school districts across the U.S. competed last year for the chance to win an entire year's worth of free Web-based file sharing and storage for their teachers and students in the School Web Lockers Supreme Storage Makeover Grant Contest. Today, San Diego-based School Web Lockers announced Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia as the grand prize winner. In addition, six other schools and school districts in California, New York, Texas and Ohio earned recognition for their entries.

The runner-up winners include Marshall Junior High, of Marshall, Texas; San Pasqual Union School District, in Escondido, CA; Clarkstown Central School District, in New City, NY; Massapequa High School, in Massapequa, NY; St. Margaret of York School, Loveland, OH; and Fort Bragg High School, Fort Bragg, CA. These schools and school districts each received 50 percent discounts off their purchase of the "cloud"-based School Web Lockers service, which is designed specifically to help K-12 schools overcome the daily challenges of storing, accessing and sharing electronic files.

The grant program called for schools to provide a one-page proposal that described their most pressing data storage needs as well as how they plan to successfully implement the School Web Lockers software on campus.

"We were very impressed with the entries, and we came away from the contest with much more insight into the critical need that exists for our technology in K-12 schools," said Kelly Smith, sales and marketing manager for School Web Lockers. "We were so pleased with the results that we plan to hold the contest annually, and although we initially intended to award only five runner-up winners this year, when it came down to making the final decision we felt that choosing six was the right thing to do."

Grand Prize Winner Faces Difficult Data Storage Challenges
Lowndes High School won the grand prize based on its entry describing the ongoing storage challenges faced by its 200 certified teachers and 3,000 students. The school network has been using a limited-storage drive, offering an average storage space of only .5MB per person. As a result, students and teachers frequently run out of the space needed to save projects completed during class time. In addition, the shared drive is purged weekly to make room for additional files, but this leaves students and teachers without a secure and convenient way to maintain their important files over time.

As frustration began to grow, the school sought an online program that would provide ample storage along with improved security and easier access from home and other locations.

"We are thrilled to be selected as the grant contest winner and we are very eager to incorporate School Web Lockers into our classrooms," said Laverne Hill, Lowndes High School media specialist. "Most of all, we're looking forward to the benefits that our students and teachers will gain from anytime-anywhere access to files and unlimited, Web-based storage."
