K-12 workers across Lower Mainland set for strike action

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - June 24, 2013) - CUPE members in several communities across the Lower Mainland will be activating their strike mandates tomorrow (Tuesday, June 25) with actions designed not to disrupt students. The move comes in the wake of strike votes taken following the breakdown of talks with BC's 27,000 CUPE K-12 education workers at the provincial level in April. Talks at the local school board level have fared no better. The school boards have been denied a mandate to settle by their funder - the BC government.

Virtually all 57 CUPE K-12 locals have now taken strike votes and are organizing for potential major job action in the fall. CUPE represents education assistants, clerical staff, trades, custodians, aboriginal support workers, bus drivers and dozens of other job classifications. The average wage for a CUPE K-12 worker is $24,000/year.
