Kantar Media Compete Releases Ranking of Top 250 Websites for July 2011

Daily Deals Sites Decline for the Month; Facebook and Twitter Reach All-Time Highs

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Aug 29, 2011) - Kantar Media Compete today released its ranking of the top 250 websites for July 2011. Among notable changes in July were drops in unique visitors to daily deal sites and soaring number of unique visitors hitting social networking sites.

Drops in Daily Deal Unique Visitors
Daily deal darling experienced an 8.9 percent drop in the month of July to 30.6 million unique visitors (UVs), its first traffic decrease in 2011. Traffic also fell for, down 28 percent to 10.6M UVs. Despite these monthly setbacks, year-over-year (Y-O-Y) growth for these two sites was impressive. Groupon jumped 373 percent, while Livingsocial climbed 149 percent.

"Two factors may have contributed to the July declines for, and other daily deal sites," said Matt Pace, managing director of retail and consumer products for Compete. "First, with so many new entrants saturating the daily deals space, deal fatigue may be setting in with consumers. But the most likely factor is seasonality, as summer vacations disrupt normal routines. This says a lot about summer web surfing behavior, something that marketers may want to explore a bit more closely."

Making Social Connections
Leading social networking sites and both grew approximately 2.4 percent month-over-month (M-O-M), with Facebook increasing 17 percent Y-O-Y for a total of 149.8M UVs and Twitter rising 12 percent Y-O-Y for a total of 32.4M UVs. These totals mark an all-time high in unique visitors for both Facebook and Twitter!

On a more romantic note, online dating site attracted 16.1M UVs during the month of July, a 19 percent increase M-O-M and 39 percent rise Y-O-Y. continued to demonstrate enviable growth in July, with a monthly increase of 34 percent and a lift of 669 percent Y-O-Y.

New kid on the social networking block, drew in 5.3M UVs in July, its first full month in existence. While the Google+ didn't break Compete's Top 250 list, it's a subdomain of the top-ranked site, Google, which grew 1.2 percent for the month for a total of 161.4M unique visitors.

One to Watch:, a new gaming site, broke the top 200 in Compete's rankings with 7.3M UVs in July, almost double its 4.1M UVs in June and a far cry from the site's rank of 97,445 in April, 1,704 in May and 354 in June.
