KARE Wins 10 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwire - April 9, 2009) - The Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) announced today that KARE-TV (Minneapolis/St. Paul) won 10 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in electronic journalism.

KARE's 10 awards were the most by any television station in the country.

"It's always an honor to be recognized by one's peers and this is no exception. We're humbled by the awards," said John Remes, president and general manager, KARE-TV.

KARE's awards included: Overall Excellence (KARE Staff); Best Newscast (May 25, 2008 Hugo Tornado); Best News Series for "Surviving the Economy" (Jeff Olsen/Deb Lyngdal/Craig Norkus/Brett Akagi); Best Continuing Coverage for the 2008 Republican National Convention; Best Investigative Report for the "University of Minnesota Children's Hospital" (Rick Kupchella/Stacey Nogy/Jonathan Malat/John Drilling); Best Sports Reporting for "Swimming Lessons" (Boyd Huppert/Jonathan Malat); Best Video for "Courage to Sail On" (Jim Douglas); Best Feature Reporting for "Duck in a Truck" (Boyd Huppert/Jonathan Malat); Best Feature Hard News for "Abbey's Legacy" (Julie Nelson/Jim Douglas/Deb Lyngdal) and Best Writing (Boyd Huppert compilation).

"It's particularly rewarding to receive so many staff awards. That speaks to the strong team we have here at KARE 11," said Tom Lindner, news director, KARE-TV.

According the RTNDA, "The Murrow Awards reward the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession."

Regional winners automatically qualify for the national awards competition, judged in early June. Those awards will be presented Oct. 12, at the RTNDA awards dinner in New York.
