Karran Finlay Marketing Inc. Recognizes Need to Provide Long-Term Solutions for Syrian Refugees

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Dec. 3, 2015) - In looking for the best way to welcome and support arriving Syrian refugees, KFM decided to create a permanent office assistant position that will be offered exclusively to a Syrian refugee. The agency believes that this position will offer more sustainable support than sponsorship. "Providing warm clothing, essential items and sponsoring a family is great, but we felt we needed to think bigger," said company President Karran Finlay. "We are a small team, but we decided we could create a position that would help give a Syrian person skills to grow a career and create a real life in Canada. We hope this will inspire more companies to do the same."

Challenges facing Syrian refugees

Over the next 3 months, around 2,000 Syrians are expected to come through Vancouver. Of the first wave of refugees that arrived earlier this week, around half will be privately sponsored and the others will be government-assisted. This assistance is not permanent. It lasts for 12 months and it is the same as provincial welfare rates. For a family of four, the total for food, shelter and basic needs is only $1,450 - not nearly enough.

Opportunity for employment

Thankfully, refugees are allowed to work as soon as they arrive in Canada. They are permanent residents and do not need any special visas or documents to work. Many Syrians are well educated and many speak fluent English.
