Kenneth Chenault of American Express Honored as 2014 Core Visionary at Money2020

Core Innovation Capital Recognizes Chenault for Leadership and Commitment to Address Financial Inclusion

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - Nov 4, 2014) - Money2020 -- Core Innovation Capital today revealed that Kenneth Chenault, CEO and Chairman of American Express, will be named its 2014 Core Visionary. Core Innovation Capital's founder and managing partner, Arjan Schütte, will formally present the award during Chenault's fireside chat at Money2020.

The Core Visionary designation highlights leaders across many different industries and disciplines that address society's biggest challenges through private enterprise. Previous winners include 2013 Core Visionary Peter H. Diamandis, founder of XPRIZE. The award aligns with Core's support for entrepreneurs that economically empower everyday Americans at scale.

"Ken's leadership qualities have been tested in times of crisis and the company came out stronger as a result. But one of his lasting contributions may well be in driving a reinvention of American Express in the digital age," said Schütte. "His influence has helped steer one of the world's most recognized financial brands to invest its time, money and technology towards helping everyday Americans improve their financial health. I challenge the rest of us to emulate his example and build stronger, more meaningful businesses by championing greater consumer value."

During his tenure at American Express, Chenault has pushed the company to make the American Express brand more welcoming and inclusive. Under his guidance, American Express has recently launched four new initiatives designed to help the economically vulnerable improve their financial health:

  • American Express Ventures Financial Inclusion Initiative, which invests in early-stage startups leveraging technology to improve financial options for the financially underserved.
  • Financial Innovation Lab, which provides researchers, counselors, and technologists an opportunity to work together to test and validate solutions for the underbanked.
  • American Express Serve: A reloadable prepaid account for the underserved with no credit check, no minimum balance, and no hidden fees.
  • Spent: Looking for Change Documentary, which follows four Americans as they navigate their way through an antiquated financial system that can inhibit, rather than help, people's ability to access, move and manage money as well as save for the future (www.spentmovie.com).

Schütte will present the Core Visionary Award to Chenault during a keynote session at Money2020, the breakout annual event for emerging payments & financial services, at 8:30am PT on November 4, 2013 in the Ironwood Ballroom at the Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
