US demand to surpass $3 billion by 2012

US demand for food safety products is projected to surpass $3 billion by 2012. The adoption of new rules and regulations, such as the mandatory pasteurization of certain products, will boost demand. Growth will also be supported by increased awareness of food safety issues and rising consumer concerns regarding the food supply, particularly following several high profile foodborne illness outbreaks, nationwide food product recalls and the discovery of contamination in a variety of imported products, especially from China. Disinfection products, including disinfectants and sanitizers, as well as disinfection equipment, will continue to be the largest products consumed in the food safety market. Other products such as diagnostics, preservatives, smart labels and tags, software and tracking systems are also utilized at various links of the food supply chain to ensure food safety and quality. The biggest market will remain food processing plants, but growth will be strong in all food safety product outlets, which also include foodservice establishments; farms; retail, wholesale and distributers; and government.

More Details

Disinfection, diagnostic products to lead gains

Through 2012, disinfection and diagnostics products are expected to provide the best opportunities. Among disinfection products, disinfection equipment will see the fastest gains, boosted by the increasing popularity of relatively new technology such as ultraviolet and ozone disinfection equipment. These technologies offer many advantages such as environment friendliness and the preservation of food properties (e.g., texture, taste, color), which can be altered when using traditional heat-based pasteurization equipment to sterilize food and beverages. Advances in ultraviolet and ozone technologies have also allowed end users to significantly reduce their costs, an advantage that will continue to increase usage of such equipment in food and beverage processing plants.

Diagnostics products constitute the second largest segment among all food safety products. Rapid diagnostic testing tools, which can detect contaminants and provide results in a matter of hours, will continue to gain market share over conventional products that take days to complete the testing. Diagnostic testing tools for pathogens will remain the most important category, especially following several foodborne outbreaks related to pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. Testing products for residues and allergens will also post strong growth, supported by consumer pressures, such as concerns related to antibiotics residues in food, and FDA regulations such as new allergen labeling.

Food processing plants to remain largest market

Food processing plants will continue to represent the largest market for food safety products. More specifically, meat and seafood processing are particularly prone to contamination, and highly publicized outbreaks and recalls, including the recall of over 143 million pounds of ground beef in February 2008, will put pressure on meat and seafood processing companies to invest in food safety. Among the other markets, the strongest gains will be seen in food service establishments, where disinfection products will benefit from more emphasis on sanitation and employee hygiene.
